Hi,
I am a computer engineer by profession and have completed 18 months with an Information Technology company. I plan to quit my job to prepare for MBA entrance exam as I do not get sufficient time to prepare while working – given the long working hours as well as working weekends.
I plan to pursue mba in HR. Is it advisable to quit after 1.5 yrs of work experience?
How will quitting affect me?
Please guide.
Regards,

Hi Nikita,
It is usually not advisable to quit work for entrance exams – esp. since you have less than 2 years of full time work experience. You could take a 15-20 day leave from work prior to examinations. That is what is ideal.
Top Business Schools WILL question the dropping of employment and thus your multi-tasking ability. As a future manager, you do have to learn to streamline your work and personal hours….
However, if it does not work out, there is no need to worry. You can always pick up a part time job along with exam preps. Whatever you do, ensure that there is continuity for atleast a year.
Hope this helps….

Hello sir,
I have completed my MBA in marketing in Jan 2014. Prior to this my first job was in 2007 -August where I continued for 27 months (in customer servicing). I then formed my own business related to the Supply of Interior materials like plywood.
For past one year (post MBA), I have been a freelancer.
Currently I am looking for a marketing job – involving business development and also connected to media planning. Pl. guide.

Hi Jayesh,
The nearest opportunity we can think of for you is – a client services or business development role with a media planning agency. However, employers will question the stability of your profile since you’ve switched too often. Hope this helps.

Hello Gurus…
I have completed my engineering in computer science field. Post that, I have some 1.3 years of experience in an outsourcing company. At this point, would it be better for me to pursue an MBA in marketing? If not, which specialization would you suggest?
mbaadmissiongurus says
Hi Vijit,
The question is a bit generic. Do you really like working in sales or marketing? Looking at your undergraduate qualification, an MBA in MIS (management information systems) or IT (Information Technology) is more advisable since it really complements your educational history.
That said, graduation in Computer Science, DOES NOT, in any way stop you from becoming a marketer. With your background + an MBA in marketing, you could join a computer software company as a product manager/sales manager/key account manager/marketing manager.
Bottomline: Both these opportunities do exist for you and are, no doubt, high-growth. “What suits your career goals and innate talent” is the point to ponder…
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

Hello MBAadmissionGURUS,
I am currently pursuing my second year MBA in Marketing specialization. I am interested in getting into the digital marketing field.
What are the skill that companies would expect from me to offer me the digital marketing job? What are the Different job roles in digital marketing itself ??
Also please tell me about the growth in this field.
Thanks & Regards,
Prakash

Hello Prakash,
This is a very interesting question.
1. Firstly, we urge you to review the section on internet marketing (digital marketing) on this page. That will be good for the start
2. MBAs with marketing specialization are of good value in digital marketing. You could take up roles such as client services manager or key account manager or business development manager with digital marketing companies.
3. If such sales-oriented roles, do not interest you, you could be hired into the marketing function of almost any company that uses digital marketing majorly (Banks, Other financial institutions, Insurance companies, Travel portals, Educational organizations or companies, Technology companies, healthcare companies – to name but a few – have begun to use digital marketing majorly). In addition to an MBA, you WILL need to get more certifications. However, the digital marketing world has limited certification authorities. You could possibly pursue some certificate courses from the eMarketing Association, USA)
4. Beyond these, you could also be a digital marketer yourself. However that will require you to pick up one area of digital marketing and master it in entirety. We have seen some MBA candidates do very well in social media marketing.
BOTTOMLINE: IF you are an MBA in marketing, you will have to master this field, one way or the other….
In terms of growth, we can only add that – even in recession times of 2008 – digital marketing spend grew at double-digit rates in major western nations. And marketing budgets are gradually getting “digitalized”. So if a corporation once invested 10% of its marketing budget in digital, it is now increasing to upto 13-15%. While the hike per company is not too small, consider the fact that every company is steadily doing – add this all up and you will see a very significant, logical trend.
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

What about digital marketing course certification by IAMAI offered by EduKart.. Will that be useful ??
It will be helpful if you list me similar valuable certification courses for digital marketing
MBAadmissionGURUS says
Hi Prakash, That is a good one. IAMAI is the only main certifying body in India. However, we believe that international level certifying bodies will carry higher weightage. You can start with IAMAI and then decide on the next certification. Choose wisely since such courses tend to be quite costly. Hope this helps…
